FREE DRINKS AT THE GATE FOR SENSIBLE DRIVERS
Bars and restaurants at The Gate, Newcastle’s premier leisure complex, are offering drivers free or discounted soft drinks as part of a designated driver scheme which is backed by Northumbria Police.
Beyond Bar will allow customers free soft drinks during their stay in the venue as long as they hand over the keys to their vehicle, this also applies to Tiger Tiger who also produce a range of non-alcoholic cocktails.
At the end of the evening the keys will be returned, but if the customer appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs the keys will be safely locked away until the following day.
Hide Bar will give a free drink per round on production of a car park ticket, TGI Fridays offer 25 percent discount on all soft drinks, while a coffee at Lloyds has been reduced to 69p at all times.
The Gate has been involved in a number of safety initiatives including launching the regional clamp-down on drink-driving, offering colourful “Spikey” devices that stop drinks being tampered with, and setting up a VIP taxi service for its customers.
Marketing manager at The Gate, Jude Leitch, said: “We take the safety of visitors to the complex very seriously and we are hoping more bars will sign up to the designated driver scheme. We would encourage all drivers to take advantage of the scheme and enjoy a night out knowing they will be getting themselves and their friend’s home safely after a night out.”
Manager of Beyond Bar, Harris Khan, said: “We have to give an incentive for people not to drink and drive. Some soft drinks can be just as expensive as alcoholic drinks which can result in a temptation to have something stronger. On most occasions we will be happy to return keys to sober drivers. However, we have a responsibility to keep hold of them if we think they have had alcohol.”
